10 Exercises For a New Year’s Resolution

Table of Contents

People all over the country are making resolutions to get in shape in the new year. One of the most common resolutions is to join a gym and get back into an exercise routine, but that’s not for everyone.

No one way of exercising is right for everyone or every goal. Some people need to lift heavy weights, while others may prefer different forms of cardio. It’s important to find what works best for you, but this list is a great place to start!

1. Squats

Squats are one of the most common exercises seen in gyms. They target your glutes and quadriceps which are two large muscle groups that burn more calories than smaller ones like biceps.

2. Lunges

Lunges are great for targeting your hamstrings, glutes and quads. They work best with dumbbells so you can hold them in front of you to add a little extra resistance.

3. Planks

Planks are one of the best exercises out there for strengthening your core. You’ll also feel a little burn in your shoulders and arms as you hold the position.

4. Push-ups

Push ups are one of my all time favorite exercises. There are so many different ways to do them, plus they’re great for targeting your core, back, chest and arms!

5. Shoulder Presses

These bad boys are great to tone your shoulders and arms. Find a weight that feels comfortable for you and push it up above your head!

6. Standing Bicep Curls

These are another staple of gym exercises; they really target the biceps, which is why it’s one of the most popular arm workouts out there.

7. Crunches

Crunches are another common exercise for strengthening your core. All you need is a mat and some free space; it doesn’t get much easier than that!

8. Pull-ups

These are one of the best upper body exercises out there, they work multiple muscles like your biceps, back and shoulders. You can do them with or without weights; I recommend starting with no weight until you’re sure you can do at least 10 (and then using a weight that feels comfortable for you.)

9. Plank Jumps

This is the only exercise on the list so far that requires some sort of equipment, but it’s definitely worth it! These are great because they work your abs and cardio at the same time.

10. Dips

These are another great exercise for working your triceps, which can be good to do when feeling particularly stressed out. Plus it’s super easy; just place two chairs side by side and place your hands on them with your arms extended. Bend your elbows and push yourself back up!

The key to getting in shape is finding an exercise routine that works for you. It may take a little bit of trial and error, but once you find it you’ll be on your way to making those resolutions a reality! American Health and Fitness is standing by to assist you with your fitness goals.
