Are you new to the gym? Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The gym can be a confusing place, especially if you’re not sure what equipment to use or how to execute the exercises. American Health and Fitness can teach you the basics so you can feel confident when working out at the gym. Keep reading for tips on how to get started!

CORE RULE: Don’t give up!

If you don’t know what equipment to use, take a moment and observe the other gym goers. If they all look like they know what they’re doing, don’t be afraid to ask for help. There’s nothing wrong with asking a fellow lifter how to perform a certain exercise. A lot of people are willing to help you – if they’re not busy of course!

LEARN BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you start working out, make sure you know how to perform the exercises. This will prevent injuries and allow you to get the most out of your workout. Take a moment before exercising and learn about each equipment. It’s also helpful to do some light stretching and warm up before lifting weights, especially if you’ve been sitting down or standing in one position for a long time.

WORKOUT REGIME

Before going to the gym, think of what muscles you want to work out and come up with a plan on how you want to achieve your goal. If you’re looking to tone your legs, for example, try doing some squats or lunges. Do you want to build muscles? You can bench press or do bicep curls! There are hundreds of different exercises out there, so learning about each one allows you to make an informed decision on how to achieve your ideal body.

APPROACH EACH WORKOUT WITH PASSION

Don’t go to the gym with the intention of getting it over with. If you do, you’ll never see results and lose interest in working out. Approach each workout with passion and enthusiasm. It’s ok to take breaks between sets if needed, but make sure you’re giving it 100%. Cheer for yourself, clap your hands, do whatever it takes to put some excitement into the workout. Every little bit helps!

WORKOUT WITH A PARTNER

If you can, train with a partner. This allows you to push each other and get the most out of your workout. Don’t be afraid to motivate someone else – they’ll return the favor.

WATER BREAKS

Drink lots of water before, during and after your workout! If you don’t, you’ll dehydrate yourself which will make it more difficult to perform exercises. Keeping hydrated is very important if you want to look good and feel great!

GYM ETIQUETTE

Wipe down equipment after you use it to prevent the spread of bacteria. Nobody wants to catch your sweat! Also, don’t stare at other gym goers because that’s just creepy. Don’t drop the weights either – the clanking sound is really annoying for everyone around you.

GYM FLEXIBILITY

Don’t be afraid to try new things at the gym. You never know what muscles you might work out by accident! However, don’t jump into a full workout routine if you’re just starting out. It’s best to take it slow and focus on one specific muscle group each time you go to the gym. Remember, have fun!

The key to getting the most out of your first workout is consistency. When you commit yourself to a regular routine, it becomes easier and more enjoyable.
